ALAMO BOWL 2010
The Big 12 announced in October that a new agreement has been reached for the participants of the Valero Alamo Bowl.
The Bowl Game will now pit the number 3 team in the Big 12 against the number 2 team in the Pacific 10 Conference). “We’re excited to partner with the Pac-10 and welcome the conference back to San Antonio,” said Gene Dawson, the Valero Alamo Bowl Chairman.”
"We view it as a significant enhancement to the Conference bowl lineup,” said Larry Scott, the Pac-10 Commissioner. “San Antonio is a marvelous post-season destination and the Valero Alamo Bowl has positioned itself as one of the elite bowl games. We anticipate providing exciting and deserving Pac-10 teams that will provide great matchups for the game, and believe the Valero Alamo Bowl will be a great experience for our football teams and the fans who follow them."
The two teams to who will meet are the Texas Tech Red Raiders against the Michigan State Spartans. Here is a quick recap of the 2009 season that got them to the Alamo Bowl.
TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS: The Red Raiders began playing intercollegiate football in 1925 against McMurry University. That game ended in a controversial 0-0 tie. You won’t have to worry about that this year as the Red Raiders, the defending 2008 Big XII Champion, are a high powered machine that put up 388 yards passing and 181 rushing yards against Oklahoma University a couple of weeks back. Taylor Potts is the best quarterback you’ve never heard of and has passed for over 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. Paired with RB Baron Batch, who is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and 6.1 receiving yards per game, the Red Raiders sold out every home game and are going to be one hard team to put down. Be sure to get your Red Raiders tickets before they're all gone!
MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS: Recently Head Coach Mark Dantonio had to kick two of his top three receivers and a starting cornerback off his team in late November for an off campus altercation. The results could be devastating against a QB that ranks third nationally and puts up as many yards through the air as the Red Raiders Potts does. The Wolverine pass defense ranks 103rd nationally giving up over 250 yards a game. On the plus side, the Spartans Head Coach Dantonio is very close friends with Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops who may have a few pointers to pass on. This is Michigan State’s third straight bowl appearance and that kind of history only helps his team. “…going to a bowl game, being one of those teams that are playing in January at a bowl such as this, which I think this is a great bowl game. It's a marquee game in terms of the exposure that you'll get, media exposure from ESPN on a Saturday night, I think at 9 p.m. eastern time,” Coach Dantonio said at the bowl announcement press conference.
Be sure to get your Alamo Bowl Tickets soon as this game just may sell out.
